Has it ever happened to you that you were asked to judge a wine? Was it an easy task or did you find it rather unpleasant? Knowing how to taste a wine and recognise its qualities is a skill that can be learned, but it only applies with a lot of experience. In any case, the first step is to get to know the methodology of sensory wine analysis.
Together we will learn the basics to be able to decode a wine thanks to our five senses and the technique of tasting. Tasting a wine means subjecting it to a series of sensory analyses to determine its organoleptic characteristics. A professional tasting involves four steps:
- the visual examination
- the olfactory test
- the examination of taste
- the finish
involving our 5 senses (sight, smell, taste, touch and to a lesser extent hearing). The techniques are learned by tasting 3 fine Italian wines in a typical and wonderful Milanese winebar.
Knowing how to taste a wine requires curiosity, knowledge and culture. It is about a mental attitude, about drinking without thirst, in small sips and slowly, for the pure pleasure of getting to know and enjoying a wine.
Of course, this can only be the beginning, because there is much more to tasting, everything that comes before: the history of a place, of a winemaker, his relationship with nature and the environment, the climatic conditions of a particular year, the terroir of the vineyards, the techniques of vinification and ageing.
But let time take its course, in the meantime, it is important to begin...
