Every summer, for the past one hundred years, Verona’s picturesque Arena offers audiences a chance to enjoy several of the world’s most prestigious operas. In 2021, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the world première at Cairo Opera House in 1871, Maestro Riccardo Muti – worldwide ambassador of Italian culture – will conduct Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida in concert form, on two extraordinary evenings: 19 and 22 June. Muti and the Arena is a combination of two internationally famous names in the world’s largest open-air theatre. To mention just a few, the star-studded cast of the two evenings features soprano Sonya Yoncheva in the role of Aida for the first time in her career, Francesco Meli as Radamès, Amonasro interpreted by Luca Salsi and Anita Rachvelishvili in the role of Amneris.

There are very numerous appointments at the 98th Opera Festival in 2021: from the opera debut by award-winning director Gabriele Muccino with the double bill Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci to the return on-stage of Katia Ricciarelli in the new role of Mamma Lucia, and great couples on stage and in life, such as Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov, who, after the extraordinary experience of 2019 are together again for three unmissable performances of Turandot, as well as Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak, together in an extremely rare performance in both roles of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. Also to be remembered is the eagerly awaited debut of Jonas Kaufmann and the welcome return of the stars Plácido Domingo and Roberto Bolle, true idols of the Opera Festival.
